COMPARE MOBILITY LIFT OPTIONS

Interior Lift or Exterior Hitch Carrier?

Both options can transport a wheelchair or mobility scooter, but they carry the equipment differently. An interior lift stores the device inside the vehicle, while an exterior carrier transports it behind the vehicle on the hitch.

Comparison of interior vehicle lifts and exterior hitch carriers
Inside the Vehicle Interior Lift Outside the Vehicle Exterior Hitch Carrier
Placement Installs in the cargo area, trunk, or rear of the vehicle. Mounts to a compatible trailer hitch receiver at the rear of the vehicle.
Suited for Vehicles with enough interior cargo space, door-opening height, and clearance for the mobility device. Vehicles with a suitable hitch when interior cargo space is limited or needed for passengers and luggage.
Weather exposure The wheelchair or mobility scooter travels enclosed inside the vehicle. The equipment travels outside and may be exposed to weather, dirt, and road conditions.
Space and setup Uses interior cargo capacity that might otherwise carry passengers, groceries, or luggage. Extends beyond the rear bumper and can affect overall vehicle length and access to the rear cargo area.
Planning priorities Equipment weight and dimensions, cargo-opening height, interior clearance, lift movement, and power supply. Hitch class, tongue-weight rating, equipment weight, ground clearance, and license plate and light visibility.
Installation Typically requires a more involved installation inside the vehicle and careful positioning of the lifting mechanism. Often uses the vehicle’s existing compatible hitch, with electrical and securement components installed as needed.
Either option Both options must be selected around the weight and dimensions of your specific wheelchair or mobility scooter, the vehicle’s capacity, and the manufacturer’s installation requirements.
